 : 3 But Jonah <3124 Yonah > rose <6965 quwm > up to flee <1272 barach > unto Tarshish <8659 Tarshiysh > from the presence <6440 paniym > of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  and went <3381 yarad > down <3381 yarad > to Joppa <3305 Yapho > ;  and he found <4672 matsa> > a ship <0591 >oniyah > going <0935 bow> > to Tarshish <8659 Tarshiysh > : so he paid <5414 nathan > the fare <7939 sakar > thereof ,  and went <3381 yarad > down <3381 yarad > into it ,  to go <0935 bow> > with them unto Tarshish <8659 Tarshiysh > from the presence <6440 paniym > of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > .

 : 4 .  But the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > sent <2904 tuwl > out a great <1419 gadowl > wind <7307 ruwach > into <0413 >el > the sea <3220 yam > ,  and there was a mighty <1419 gadowl > tempest <5591 ca<ar > in the sea <3220 yam > ,  so that the ship <0591 >oniyah > was like <2803 chashab > to be broken <7665 shabar > .

 : 5 Then the mariners <4419 mallach > were afraid <3372 yare> > ,  and cried <2199 za<aq > every man unto his god <0430 >elohiym > ,  and cast <2904 tuwl > forth <2904 tuwl > the wares <3627 k@liy > that  [ were ]  in the ship <0591 >oniyah > into <0413 >el > the sea <3220 yam > ,  to lighten <7043 qalal >  [ it ]  of them .  But Jonah <3124 Yonah > was gone <3381 yarad > down <3381 yarad > into <0413 >el > the sides <3411 y@rekah > of the ship <5600 c@phiynah > ;  and he lay <7901 shakab > ,  and was fast asleep <7290 radam > .

 : 6 So the shipmaster came <7126 qarab > to him ,  and said <0559 >amar > unto him ,  What <4100 mah > meanest thou ,  O sleeper <7290 radam > ?  arise <6965 quwm > ,  call <7121 qara> > upon thy God <0430 >elohiym > ,  if <0194 >uwlay > so be that God <0430 >elohiym > will think <6245 <ashath > upon us ,  that we perish <6> not .

 : 7 And they said <0559 >amar > every <0376 >iysh > one <0376 >iysh > to his fellow <7453 rea< > ,  Come <3212 yalak > ,  and let us cast <5307 naphal > lots <1486 gowral > ,  that we may know <3045 yada< > for whose <4310 miy > cause <7945 shel > this <2063 zo>th > evil <7451 ra< >  [ is ]  upon us .  So they cast <5307 naphal > lots <1486 gowral > ,  and the lot <1486 gowral > fell <5307 naphal > upon Jonah <3124 Yonah > .

 : 8 Then said <0559 >amar > they unto him ,  Tell <5046 nagad > us ,  we pray <4994 na> > thee ,  for whose cause <0834 >aher > this <2063 zo>th > evil <7451 ra< >  [ is ]  upon us ;  What <4100 mah >  [ is ]  thine occupation <4399 m@la>kah > ?  and whence <0370 >aiyn > comest <0935 bow> > thou ?  what <4100 mah >  [ is ]  thy country <0776 >erets > ?  and of what people <5971 <am >  [ art ]  thou ?

 : 9 And he said <0559 >amar > unto them ,  I  [ am ]  an Hebrew <5680 <Ibriy > ;  and I fear <3373 yare> > the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  the God <0430 >elohiym > of heaven <8064 shamayim > ,  which <0834 >aher > hath made <6213 <asah > the sea <3220 yam > and the dry <3004 yabbashah >  [ land ]  .

 : 10 Then were the men <0582 >enowsh > exceedingly <1419 gadowl > afraid <3372 yare> > ,  and said <0559 >amar > unto him ,  Why <4100 mah > hast thou done <6213 <asah > this <2063 zo>th > ?  For the men <0582 >enowsh > knew <3045 yada< > that he fled <1272 barach > from the presence <6440 paniym > of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  because <3588 kiy > he had told <5046 nagad > them .

 : 11 .  Then said <0559 >amar > they unto him ,  What <4100 mah > shall we do <6213 <asah > unto thee ,  that the sea <3220 yam > may be calm <8367 shathaq > unto us ?  for the sea <3220 yam > wrought <1980 halak > ,  and was tempestuous <5490 cowph > .

 : 12 And he said <0559 >amar > unto them ,  Take <5375 nasa> > me up ,  and cast <2904 tuwl > me forth <2904 tuwl > into <0413 >el > the sea <3220 yam > ;  so shall the sea <3220 yam > be calm <8367 shathaq > unto you : for I know <3045 yada< > that for my sake <7945 shel > this great <1419 gadowl > tempest <5591 ca<ar >  [ is ]  upon you .

 : 13 Nevertheless the men <0582 >enowsh > rowed <2864 chathar > hard to bring <7725 shuwb >  [ it ]  to the land <3004 yabbashah > ;  but they could <3201 yakol > not : for the sea <3220 yam > wrought <1980 halak > ,  and was tempestuous <5490 cowph > against <5921 <al > them .

 : 14 Wherefore they cried <7121 qara> > unto the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  and said <0559 >amar > ,  We beseech <0577 >anna> > thee ,  O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  we beseech <0577 >anna> > thee ,  let us not perish <6> for this <2088 zeh > man s <0376 >iysh > life <5315 nephesh > ,  and lay <5414 nathan > not upon us innocent <5355 naqiy > blood <1818 dam > : for thou ,  O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  hast done <6213 <asah > as it pleased <2654 chaphets > thee .

 : 15 So they took up Jonah <3124 Yonah > ,  and cast <2904 tuwl > him forth <2904 tuwl > into <0413 >el > the sea <3220 yam > : and the sea <3220 yam > ceased <5975 <amad > from her raging <2197 za<aph > .

 : 16 Then the men <0582 >enowsh > feared <3372 yare> > the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > exceedingly <1419 gadowl > ,  and offered <2076 zabach > a sacrifice <2077 zebach > unto the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  and made vows <5088 neder > .

 : 17 Now the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > had prepared <4487 manah > a great <1419 gadowl > fish <1709 dag > to swallow <1104 bala< > up Jonah <3124 Yonah > .  And Jonah <3124 Yonah > was in the belly <4578 me<ah > of the fish <1709 dag > three <7969 shalowsh > days <3117 yowm > and three <7969 shalowsh > nights <3915 layil > .

 : Jonah 2

 : 1 .  Then Jonah <3124 Yonah > prayed <6419 palal > unto the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > his God <0430 >elohiym > out of the fish s <1710 dagah > belly <4578 me<ah > ,

 : 2 And said <0559 >amar > ,  I cried <7121 qara> > by reason of mine affliction <6869 tsarah > unto the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  and he heard <6030 <anah > me ;  out of the belly <0990 beten > of hell <7585 sh@>owl > cried <7768 shava< > I ,   [ and ]  thou heardest <8085 shama< > my voice <6963 qowl > .

 : 3 For thou hadst cast <7993 shalak > me into the deep <4688 m@tsowlah > ,  in the midst <3824 lebab > of the seas <3220 yam > ;  and the floods <5104 nahar > compassed <5437 cabab > me about : all <3605 kol > thy billows <4867 mishbar > and thy waves <1530 gal > passed <5674 <abar > over <5674 <abar > me .

 : 4 Then I said <0559 >amar > ,  I am cast <1644 garash > out of thy sight <5869 <ayin > ;  yet <0389 >ak > I will look <5027 nabat > again <3254 yacaph > toward <0413 >el > thy holy <6944 qodesh > temple <1964 heykal > .

 : 5 The waters <4325 mayim > compassed <0661 >aphaph > me about ,   [ even ]  to the soul <5315 nephesh > : the depth <8415 t@howm > closed <5437 cabab > me round <5437 cabab > about ,  the weeds <5488 cuwph > were wrapped <2280 chabash > about my head <7218 ro>sh > .

 : 6 I went <3381 yarad > down <3381 yarad > to the bottoms of the mountains <2022 har > ;  the earth <0776 >erets > with her bars <1280 b@riyach >  [ was ]  about <1157 b@<ad > me for ever <5769 <owlam > : yet hast thou brought <5927 <alah > up my life <2416 chay > from corruption <7845 shachath > ,  O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > my God <0430 >elohiym > .

 : 7 When my soul <5315 nephesh > fainted <5848 <ataph > within <5921 <al > me I remembered <2142 zakar > the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > : and my prayer <8605 t@phillah > came <0935 bow> > in unto thee ,  into <0413 >el > thine holy <6944 qodesh > temple <1964 heykal > .

 : 8 They that observe <8104 shamar > lying <7723 shav> > vanities <1892 hebel > forsake <5800 <azab > their own mercy <2617 checed > .

 : 9 But I will sacrifice <2076 zabach > unto thee with the voice <6963 qowl > of thanksgiving <8426 towdah > ;  I will pay <7999 shalam >  [ that ]  that I have vowed <5087 nadar > .  Salvation <3444 y@shuw<ah >  [ is ]  of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > .

 : 10 .  And the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > spake <0559 >amar > unto the fish <1709 dag > ,  and it vomited <6958 qow> > out Jonah <3124 Yonah > upon the dry <3004 yabbashah >  [ land ]  .

 : Jonah 3

 : 1 .  And the word <1697 dabar > of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > came <1961 hayah > unto Jonah <3124 Yonah > the second <8145 sheniy > time ,  saying <0559 >amar > ,

 : 2 Arise <6965 quwm > ,  go <3312 Y@phunneh > unto Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > ,  that great <1419 gadowl > city <5892 <iyr > ,  and preach <7121 qara> > unto it the preaching <7150 q@riy>ah > that I bid <1696 dabar > thee .

 : 3 So Jonah <3124 Yonah > arose <6965 quwm > ,  and went <3212 yalak > unto Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > ,  according to the word <1697 dabar > of the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > .  Now Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > was an exceeding <0430 >elohiym > great <1419 gadowl > city <5892 <iyr > of three <7969 shalowsh > days <3117 yowm >  journey <4109 mahalak > .

 : 4 And Jonah <3124 Yonah > began <2490 chalal > to enter <0935 bow> > into the city <5892 <iyr > a day s <3117 yowm > journey <4109 mahalak > ,  and he cried <7121 qara> > ,  and said <0559 >amar > ,  Yet <5750 <owd > forty <0705 >arba<iym > days <3117 yowm > ,  and Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > shall be overthrown <2015 haphak > .

 : 5 .  So the people <0582 >enowsh > of Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > believed <0539 >aman > God <0430 >elohiym > ,  and proclaimed <7121 qara> > a fast <6685 tsowm > ,  and put <3847 labash > on sackcloth <8242 saq > ,  from the greatest <1419 gadowl > of them even to the least <6996 qatan > of them .

 : 6 For word <1697 dabar > came <5060 naga< > unto the king <4428 melek > of Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > ,  and he arose <6965 quwm > from his throne <3678 kicce> > ,  and he laid <5674 <abar > his robe <0155 >addereth > from him ,  and covered <3680 kacah >  [ him ]  with sackcloth <8242 saq > ,  and sat <3427 yashab > in ashes <0665 >epher > .

 : 7 And he caused  [ it ]  to be proclaimed <2199 za<aq > and published <0559 >amar > through Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > by the decree <2940 ta<am > of the king <4428 melek > and his nobles <1419 gadowl > ,  saying <0559 >amar > ,  Let neither <0369 >ayin > man <0120 >adam > nor beast <0929 b@hemah > ,  herd <1241 baqar > nor flock <6629 tso>n > ,  taste <2938 ta<am > any <3792 k@thab > thing : let them not feed <7462 ra<ah > ,  nor <0408 >al > drink <8354 shathah > water <4325 mayim > :

 : 8 But let man <0120 >adam > and beast <0929 b@hemah > be covered <3680 kacah > with sackcloth <8242 saq > ,  and cry <7121 qara> > mightily <2393 chezqah > unto God <0430 >elohiym > : yea ,  let them turn <7725 shuwb > every <0376 >iysh > one <0376 >iysh > from his evil <7451 ra< > way <1870 derek > ,  and from the violence <2555 chamac > that  [ is ]  in their hands <3709 kaph > .

 : 9 Who <4310 miy > can tell <3045 yada< >  [ if ]  God <0430 >elohiym > will turn <7725 shuwb > and repent <5162 nacham > ,  and turn <7725 shuwb > away from his fierce <2740 charown > anger <0639 >aph > ,  that we perish <6> not ?

 : 10 And God <0430 >elohiym > saw <7200 ra>ah > their works <4639 ma<aseh > ,  that they turned <7725 shuwb > from their evil <7451 ra< > way <1870 derek > ;  and God <0430 >elohiym > repented <5162 nacham > of the evil <7451 ra< > ,  that he had said <1696 dabar > that he would do <6213 <asah > unto them ;  and he did <6213 <asah >  [ it ]  not .

 : Jonah 4

 : 1 .  But it displeased Jonah <3124 Yonah > exceedingly <1419 gadowl > ,  and he was very angry <2734 charah > .

 : 2 And he prayed <6419 palal > unto the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  and said <0559 >amar > ,  I pray <0577 >anna> > thee ,  O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,   [ was ]  not this <2088 zeh > my saying <1697 dabar > ,  when <5704 <ad > I was yet <5704 <ad > in my country <0127 >adamah > ?  Therefore I fled <1272 barach > before <6924 qedem > unto Tarshish <8659 Tarshiysh > : for I knew <3045 yada< > that thou  [ art ]  a gracious <2587 channuwn > God <0410 >el > ,  and merciful <7349 rachuwm > ,  slow <0750 >arek > to anger <0639 >aph > ,  and of great <7227 rab > kindness <2617 checed > ,  and repentest <5162 nacham > thee of the evil <7451 ra< > .

 : 3 Therefore now <6258 <attah > ,  O LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  take <3947 laqach > ,  I beseech <4994 na> > thee ,  my life <5315 nephesh > from me ;  for  [ it is ]  better <2896 towb > for me to die <4194 maveth > than to live <2416 chay > .

 : 4 Then said <0559 >amar > the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  Doest thou well <3190 yatab > to be angry <2734 charah > ?

 : 5 .  So Jonah <3124 Yonah > went <3318 yatsa> > out of the city <5892 <iyr > ,  and sat <3427 yashab > on the east <6924 qedem > side <6924 qedem > of the city <5892 <iyr > ,  and there <8033 sham > made <6213 <asah > him a booth <5521 cukkah > ,  and sat <3427 yashab > under <8478 tachath > it in the shadow <6738 tsel > ,  till <5704 <ad > he might see <7200 ra>ah > what <4100 mah > would become <1961 hayah > of the city <5892 <iyr > .

 : 6 And the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > God <0430 >elohiym > prepared <4487 manah > a gourd <7021 qiyqayown > ,  and made  [ it ]  to come <5927 <alah > up over <5921 <al > Jonah <3124 Yonah > ,  that it might be a shadow <6738 tsel > over <5921 <al > his head <7218 ro>sh > ,  to deliver <5337 natsal > him from his grief <7451 ra< > .  So Jonah <3124 Yonah > was exceeding <1419 gadowl > glad <8056 sameach > of the gourd <7021 qiyqayown > .

 : 7 But God <0430 >elohiym > prepared <4487 manah > a worm <8438 towla< > when the morning <7837 shachar > rose <5927 <alah > the next <4283 mochorath > day <4283 mochorath > ,  and it smote <5221 nakah > the gourd <7021 qiyqayown > that it withered <3001 yabesh > .

 : 8 And it came <1961 hayah > to pass ,  when the sun <8121 shemesh > did arise <2224 zarach > ,  that God <0430 >elohiym > prepared <4487 manah > a vehement <2759 chariyshiy > east <6921 qadiym > wind <7307 ruwach > ;  and the sun <8121 shemesh > beat <5221 nakah > upon the head <7218 ro>sh > of Jonah <3124 Yonah > ,  that he fainted <5968 <alaph > ,  and wished <7592 sha>al > in himself to die <4191 muwth > ,  and said <0559 >amar > ,   [ It is ]  better <2896 towb > for me to die <4191 muwth > than to live <2416 chay > .

 : 9 And God <0430 >elohiym > said <0559 >amar > to Jonah <3124 Yonah > ,  Doest thou well <3190 yatab > to be angry <2734 charah > for the gourd <7021 qiyqayown > ?  And he said <0559 >amar > ,  I do well <3190 yatab > to be angry <2734 charah > ,   [ even ]  unto death <4194 maveth > .

 : 10 Then said <0559 >amar > the LORD <3068 Y@hovah > ,  Thou hast had pity <2347 chuwc > on <5921 <al > the gourd <7021 qiyqayown > ,  for the which <0834 >aher > thou hast not laboured <5998 <amal > ,  neither <3808 lo> > madest it grow <1431 gadal > ;  which came <1961 hayah > up in a night <3915 layil > ,  and perished <6> in a night <3915 layil > :

 : 11 And should not I spare <2347 chuwc > Nineveh <5210 Niyn@veh > ,  that great <1419 gadowl > city <5892 <iyr > ,  wherein are more <7227 rab > than sixscore thousand <7239 ribbow > persons <0120 >adam > that cannot <3808 lo> > discern <3045 yada< > between <0996 beyn > their right <3225 yamiyn > hand <3235 yamar > and their left <8040 s@mo>wl > hand <8040 s@mo>wl > ;  and  [ also ]  much <7227 rab > cattle <0929 b@hemah > ?
